Addiction Rehabilitation, or rehab for short,is the process by which a person who suffers from addictions to things such as drugs, sex, gambling, the internet, among others, commits to a program, lead by recognized therapists, to change ones behavior in a positive manner and cease the tendency to engage in destructive behaviors. The process generally begins with an analysis of the patients biological/medical and social conditions, along with things such as stress, personal history and overall outlook on life, to determine the root causes of the problem.
After this, the therapists work with the patient to formulate a treatment program in which the patient can confront the root causes of the addictions and take steps to end the destructive actions. The various approaches can include in-patient or out-patient programs, 12 step strategies, client centered services, counseling, self help strategies, behavioral and cognitive therapy, group therapy sessions such as those used by Alcoholics Anonymous, along with many other options depending on what is best for the patient. Medications may also be prescribed to supplement the recovery process if a Doctor or Psychiatrist determines that it would be beneficial.
Despite the tremendous advances of modern therapies, the healing process also requires the conscious decision of the patient to free themselves of the destructive patterns and by willfully committing to the healing process;
success is possible, especially with the help of trained specialists who will provide the guidance and continuing care, as well as having a strong support network which can include family, friends or even others who are combating addiction alongside you. One of the great miracles of life is that we have the power to choose among alternatives and this very gift is how we can improve the quality of life for ourselves and others, and choosing to make the change away from destructive behaviors and addictions is the first step forward.
