Addiction to Fame

Piers Morgans interview on CNN with Dr. Deepak Chopra regarding the struggles Hollywood has with prescription drug addiction and addiction to fame opened an important conversation for us to have:

Piers Morgan:  I have seen people wreck their lives through the addiction to being famous and it takes over their lives – you have seen this I know with other people. What is the cure for this kind of addiction? How do you treat an addiction to fame?

Paradise Valley Wellness Centre partner, Deepak Chopra: You have to realize first of all that fame itself actually causes the same brain chemical changes as a drug does, and you have to get counseling for a situation like that. It is very difficult of course, but with our rehab centre in Paradise Valley, British Columbia, we counsel people and detox them both emotionally and physically using a number of procedures. We teach them various meditation, yoga and relaxation techniques, cognitive therapy, and even then it is quite difficult.

So many of us experience some level of pain and struggle that prevents us from enjoying the simple pleasures of daily life. The recent death of Whitney Houston is a poignant reminder that life is precious and priceless! It is important to remember that we are meant to live consciously and in the present moment, to be free to fully experience the joys of life and to reap the rewards of healthy, caring relationships with the people around us.

We are learning that tremendous commonalities exist amongst destructive compelling / addictive behaviours.  The temporary but powerfully rewarding and soothing aspects of a variety of behaviours and substances can become addictive.

Behaviours and substances may become compelling when they were initially experienced as highly functional or extremely important (e.g. if experiencing love and acceptance was contingent on successful performances, if alcohol dulled sensations of being terrified, or shopping or work made us feel powerful in response to a personal history of disempowerment).

We are a therapeutic centre working to explore and address underlying needs which the (now-destructive) compelling behaviour may have originally soothed. As guests integrate practices of daily meditation and yoga, guests become more clearly aware and able to address historical issues presently haunting or impacting them.  A subsequent committed practice of meditation, yoga, and mindfulness supports continued wellness, connection, and growth.

Those who are actively seeking help to liberate themselves from destructive compelling behaviours have the opportunity to transform their relationship with self and others while with us.  The ability to develop, deepen, and maintain healthy social relationships where one is known, accepted, and cared for is certainly key to the healing process occurring here and to the healthy living that continues after leaving Paradise Valley Wellness Centre.

The depth of healing we have seen guests experience in our therapeutic program is profound. Whether dealing with addictions, addictive behaviours, depression and anxiety, the pressures of fame or the impact of emotional trauma, many are responding to the completely unique blend of on-site therapies delivered by a team of highly trained professionals. Guests can fully integrate mind, body, and spirit, the discovery of that inner oasis that exists within us can be made, and certain depths of healing may take place that are difficult to achieve otherwise.

In Honor of David Simon: Inspirational Author and Supportive Partner

Dear Paradise Wellness Centre Community;

David SimonIt is with saddened hearts that we share with you today the news that Dr. David Simon has passed away. His wisdom, courage and love will continue to inspire us all well into the future.

We include a favorite excerpt from the poet
David called “my beloved Hafiz”:

The Sun Never Says
Even
 after
all this time
 the sun
never says to the earth,
‘You owe me.’

Look
what happens
with a love like that
~
It lights the whole world!

Physician and author, loving father, husband, and a dedicated humanist, David shared his unique gifts with the world, shining light on a path of profound inner peace.

We at the Centre feel so very grateful that David’s commitment to his work reached far beyond the pages of his books and deep into the daily lives of those at our Wellness Centre. Many who have come here have chosen to take up the tools he so generously shared throughout his lifetime. His work continues to assist many to move through truly profound changes, deepen their sense of connection to themselves and the world at large, and to use their time here to create their lives anew.

It is with both gratitude and deep regret that we say goodbye to David today, in full recognition of the tremendous impact his dedication to a Chopra / Paradise Valley Wellness Centre partnership has had on us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

From the Bhagavad-Gita: Chapter 2, Verse 20

Translation:
The soul never takes birth and never dies at any time nor does it come into being again when the body is created. The soul is birthless, eternal, imperishable and timeless and is never destroyed when the body is destroyed.

DELIGHT YOUR SENSES!

We may think of the experience of eating as one of sitting down to a meal, consuming the food before us, and allowing the digestive process to take over. At the Paradise Valley Wellness Centre near Vancouver BC, we bring our full attention and awareness to the wisdom of our five senses when meal time approaches, creating opportunities to fully experience and appreciate the process by which we nourish our bodies.

Approaching nutrition and eating habits as a way to nurture ourselves and support overall recovery can be a fresh concept for some, but it is truly the core around which we begin to introduce healthy new daily rhythms and develop a deeper awareness around essential self care.

The enticing aromas of the Centre’s kitchen, the warm and comforting surroundings in which we choose to eat, along with the visual appeal of the dishes before us, all serve to stimulate the appetite and enhance the enjoyment of our daily meals.

Guests of our Centre are here to contend with many types of addictions, addictive behaviors, various levels of anxiety, depression, along with PTSD, eating disorders and various substance abuse issues.Initially, people may arrive here with apprehension around the dietary shift that may be required in coming to a residential treatment centre that offers a vegetarian approach. Our guests quickly find that the extensively trained chefs provide balanced, nutritious meals in the most appetizing combinations, fully satisfying our senses with the six tasty flavors the body craves. All five of our sensory organs are awakened by the diverse selection of foods with sweet, sour, salty, bitter pungent and astringent qualities, creating a fully rounded meal time experience that excites our senses from start to finish.

Fresh herbs contribute to the enjoyment of our meals as well – the sweet leafy green scent of basil and fresh sprigs of curly leaved parsley is instantly mouth watering and a perfect way to begin any eating experience. Even a thoughtful arrangement of container herbs nearby throughout the colder seasons brings a naturally inspiring element to each meal time.

The bright vivid colours of quality ingredients combine to create delectable culinary delights and serve to stimulate our Agni- or digestive fire – prior to eating. The artful arrangement of whole, unprocessed foods on dishware that is pleasing to the eye and appropriate to what is being offered also adds warmth and a personal touch to meal presentation, creating unique appeal and a gratifying, tactile enjoyment of each course.

When selecting each ingredient for a dish, the texture, size and shape are all carefully considered. By utilizing the full range of all six tantalizing flavors and the entire spectrum of colour along with interesting texture combinations, we expand the experience of what it means to be nourished.Contrasting food shapes – cleverly configured – bring balance and striking visual interest to the plate, while the selection of ingredients, whether they be firm or smooth, soft or crunchy, add the interest of a diverse textural palate.

Both sound and light also play roles in creating an ideal environment in which to enjoy a great meal and encourage healthy digestion. The relaxing quality of softened lighting, subtle colours and simple
furnishings used in the dining area allow for the inward focus necessary to experience the true essence of a meal, accompanied only by the gentle sounds of soft conversation.

Part of the healing process undertaken here is to learn acceptance of the loving care and attention as offered by the nutritious and comforting foods from our kitchen. Through attendance at regular cooking demonstrations, sessions on holistic nutrition and market tours, guests may choose to adopt this nurturing approach to self-care when they eventually depart.

By actively bringing conscious awareness to each of the five senses during the process of selection,
preparation, presentation and consumption of the savory, satisfying meals here at the Centre, we open ourselves to this full sense of true nourishment and to a profound appreciation for that which sustains us.

“Your food is amazing and the meals here make every day great! Your individual styles and creativity
make every meal exciting. You three are an All Star Team of Chefs! Thank you all so much!” Max – USA

Premier Christy Clark announces free support to help smokers

VANCOUVER – Nicotine replacement therapies will be available to all British Columbian smokers at no cost and smoking cessation prescription drugs will be covered under PharmaCare, Premier Christy Clark announced today.

“Every year tobacco-related deaths rob us needlessly of friends, family and loved ones,” said Premier Christy Clark. “Tobacco is the largest single cause of premature death and disease in our province and while a lot of progress has been made, there is still more we can do. This program will provide smokers with a new level of direct support to quit, to live smoke-free, and to improve their own health as well as the health of their families.”

Starting Sept. 30, 2011, British Columbians will have the choice of either nicotine gum or patches to help quit tobacco with a free supply for up to 12 weeks, or obtaining coverage of prescribed smoking cessation drugs through PharmaCare. The program will cost an estimated $15 million to $25 million, based on the number of individuals who use the program.

Over the coming months, the Ministry of Health will work with groups such as the B.C. Lung Association, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon, the Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon Division, BC Pharmacy Association, pharmaceutical manufacturers, health authorities and the BC Medical Association on the best way to implement the program, including how to distribute nicotine gum and patches.

“By reducing the number of people who smoke, not only will we prevent or delay the onset of diseases like heart attacks and cancer, but also avoid the millions of dollars cost on our health-care system,” said Health Minister Michael de Jong.

Each year, more than 6,000 British Columbians die from tobacco use. The cost to the B.C. economy is approximately $2.3 billion annually, including $605 million for direct health-care costs.

“Providing coverage for these cessation therapies is a significant step forward in helping even more British Columbians break their dependency on tobacco. For some people wanting to quit, having to pay for these therapies is a barrier in helping them achieve success. Providing this additional support is certain to make a difference,” said Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon’s COO Diego Marchese.

“Quitting cold turkey can be tough, and quit smoking aids can help people not only quit but also prevent them having a relapse and starting to smoke again,” said Scott McDonald, CEO of the BC Lung Association.

“Lung cancer accounts for 26 per cent of all cancer deaths in B.C. Providing people with tools to quit smoking will pay off in the long run, as tobacco is the single largest preventable cause of death and disease,” said Cathy Adair, VP cancer control, Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon. “We are glad to see the Premier show leadership towards cancer prevention.”

“The BC Medical Association has been advocating for a decade that one of health care’s most cost-effective measures in reducing death, disease and medical costs be a covered expense,” said BC Medical Association president-elect Dr. Nasir Jetha. “We are extremely pleased that clinical tobacco intervention and stop-smoking medications will now be available to all British Columbians with full government support. This is great news for the 70 per cent of B.C. smokers who are wanting to quit.”

BC Pharmacy Association CEO Marnie Mitchell said, “Many community pharmacists already offer support and advice to patients who wish to stop smoking, including smoking cessation clinics. We welcome the chance to be involved in this consultation, as community pharmacists are a trusted, accessible health-care resource.”

As part of the consultation, government will look at ensuring the provision of nicotine replacement therapies and smoking cessation prescription drugs is looked at through a rural lens, making sure products are accessible to all B.C. smokers, regardless of where they live.

While B.C. has the lowest smoking rate in Canada at 14.9 per cent, there are approximately 550,000 British Columbians who smoke. An estimated 70 per cent of smokers in B.C. want to quit.

Currently, QuitNow Services offers British Columbian smokers a confidential helpline (1 877 455-2233) with information available in 130 languages and an online quit community where professional and peer support is available 24/7. As well, quitters can sign up for email quit tips and text messages, join QuitNow’s Twitter and Facebook page and explore interactive quit tools and resources at: www.quitnow.ca

Smoking bad for your vision, according to new research

By: Deepak Chopra

We all know that smoking causes cancer, cardiovascular disease, and multiple respiratory illnesses. Does anyone really need another reason to quit? Okay, here’s one: To save your vision.

Surprised? In addition to the well-known, systemic illnesses that kill hundreds of thousands every year, smokers have a higher risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts. The macula is the central visual field of the eye’s retina, the layer of tissue at the back of the eye that sends visual information to the brain. Everyone’s risk of macular degeneration increases with age, but smoking increases the risk of macular degeneration two-to three-fold compared with the risk for those who have never smoked.

Smoking increases blood pressure in the eye’s small vessels and depresses antioxidant levels and immune reactions — all believed to be involved in macular degeneration. Heavy smokers also have a three-fold increase in their risk of developing cataracts, clouding over of the eye’s lens. Doctors believe the toxins in smoke cause damage to the proteins in the lens cells. People with cataracts have blurry, clouded vision and eventually must have their lenses removed or replaced.

Quit smoking, and your eyes will thank you. An in-depth study of smoking and eye health in Wisconsin, The Beaver Dam Eye Study, yielded some eye-opening results. Those who quit smoking for at least five years had about the same risk of developing macular degeneration as those who had never smoked at all. In another study, former smokers who had quit at least 10 years earlier had a risk of cataracts 21 to 17 percent lower than those subjects who currently smoked.

If you do smoke, it is important to be honest about your smoking habits with your ophthalmologist. That way, he or she can watch carefully for signs of cataracts and macular degeneration. Your eye doctor will encourage you to quit smoking, of course.
